What changed? We added a description of the Privacy Shield Framework. We revised the Privacy Notice to make it clearer overall.


We at Bugsnag know you care about how your personal information is used and shared and we take your privacy seriously. Please read the following to learn more about our Privacy Notice.

This Privacy Notice is written for visitors to our various publicly accessible websites which include, and other websites where this Privacy Notice is published (Visitors). For ease, we call all these publicly accessible websites collectively the Site for short. The Site does not include our account portal, or other access to our Services that you get when you sign up for an account with Bugsnag.

This Privacy Notice also is written for Customers who use our software-as-a-service applications and other products and services (collectively, the Services) that we provide to customers who have purchased our Services (Customers). If you are a Customer then this Privacy Notice is incorporated into your Services agreement with Bugsnag.

By using or accessing the Site or Services as a Visitor or a Customer you acknowledge that you accept the practices and policies outlined in this Privacy Notice and you hereby consent that we will collect, use and share your information in the ways outlined in this Privacy Notice.

We refer to this Privacy Notice in our Site Terms available at Defined terms that we use but don’t define in this Privacy Notice are defined in the Terms of Use.

For this Privacy Notice, the words our, us, we, and Bugsnag refer to Bugsnag, Inc., and our affiliates, if any, (which includes any person or entity that controls us, is controlled by us, or is under common control with us, such as our subsidiary (if applicable), parent company (if applicable), or our employees).

1. What does this Privacy Notice cover?

This Privacy Notice covers our treatment of personally identifiable information that we collect and receive when you access our Site or Services (“Personal Information”). This Privacy Notice does not cover the practices of companies we don’t own or control or people that we don’t manage. We use this Personal Information to provide a meaningful, safe, efficient and customized experience.

We use this Personal Information:

  • internally in connection with our Site to provide our Site services;
  • to analyze how Visitors use the Site,
  • to provide targeted online marketing for the Site,
  • to help us improve the content and functionality of our Site, to better understand our potential and existing Customers,
  • to contact you,
  • to allow Customers to set up Customer accounts,
  • to allow Customers to fulfill Plan purchases and
  • to provide the Services to Customers.

In certain cases, we may also share some Personal Information with third parties, but only as described below.

You have the opportunity to choose whether your Personal Information will be disclosed by Bugsnag to third parties in the manner described in this Notice. Bugsnag will not use your Personal Information for any purpose that is materially different than the purposes for which it was originally collected or received, as described in this Notice, or the purposes which you otherwise authorized. Please review this Notice for ways in which you can exercise choice about Bugsnag’s use of your Personal Information.

2. What information does Bugsnag collect?

2A. Information You Provide to Us

We receive and store any information you knowingly provide to us.

When you use the “Contact Us” feature or register. In order to contact us through the Site you must provide an email address and a name. You also may provide comments when you contact us. In order to register to use the Services you must provide: email address, first name, last name, company or organization name and a password. When you contact us we may collect other Personal Information you want to provide, such as your phone number and location.

What we do with this information: We use this information to communicate with you and to provide the Services to you. For example, if you’ve given us your email address, we may send you an email about your use of the Site or for customer support purposes. Also, we may receive a confirmation when you open an email from us. This confirmation helps us make our communications with you more interesting and improve our Services. If you do not want to receive communications from us, please indicate your preference by opting out via the links provided in the emails.

When you purchase a Plan. When you purchase a Plan on the Site you must provide your email address, first and last name, credit card number, card expiration date and card CVC code. The credit card information is encrypted and transmitted for storage to a high security vault according to strict industry standards. Once the data reaches the vault it is “tokenized”. No credit card information is retained in Bugsnag’s own systems. Your credit card information is not exposed anywhere in our own systems. Please do not send your credit card information to our team directly, for example by emailing this information to Please use our secure, online system to enter your credit card information.

What we do with this information: We use this information, along with your email, for billing purposes, to fulfill your purchase and to communicate with you about your purchase. 

Offline Information. As you might expect, we usually collect or receive information through our Site. But we also may collect information offline and it’s important to us that we preserve the privacy of your Personal Information both online and off. For example, if we speak with you by phone as part of our sales process, we may ask for your location. There are other ways we could learn of Personal Information offline, but this Privacy Notice doesn’t try to predict all those methods. We just want you to know that we try to treat offline information collection, uses and disclosures consistently with our online privacy practices.

2B. Information Collected Automatically from our Site

Browser or Device information. Like most websites, our Site automatically receives and records information on our server logs from your browser or device, which may include your IP address, geolocation data, device identification, browser type, internet service provider, the referring/exit pages, the page you requested and “cookie” information. “Cookies” are identifiers we transfer to your browser or device that allow us to recognize your browser or device. Cookies also tell us how and when pages and features in our Site are visited and by how many people. By continuing to visit our Site or use our Services, you are agreeing to use of the cookies and similar technologies for the purposes we describe in this Privacy Notice.

What we do with this information: We use cookies and other technologies to track how all our Visitors use our Site overall, to help individual Visitors to our Site have the best possible experience, to provide targeted advertising and to track the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns.

Third Party Cookies. If you click on a link to a third party website or service, a third party may also transmit cookies to you. This Privacy Notice does not cover the use of cookies by any third parties and we aren’t responsible for their privacy policies and practices. Please be aware that cookies placed by third parties may continue to track your activities online even after you have left our Site and those third parties may not honor “Do Not Track” requests you have set using your browser or device.

What we do with this information:

We may use this data to customize content for you that we think you might like, based on your usage patterns. For example, this data can tell us how often Visitors use a particular feature of the Site and we can use that knowledge to make the Site interesting to as many Visitors as possible. We may also use it to improve the Site. For example, “session” cookies allow us to remember if a Customer is logged in to its Bugsnag dashboard, which is convenient for the Customer. We also use this information to gather demographic information about Visitors for targeted online marketing purposes. We use retargeting cookies to allow us to retarget advertisements at viewers who have visited our Site in the past.

2C. Information Collected From Other Sites

Through cookies we place on your browser or device, we may collect information about your online activity after you leave our Site. What we do with this information: We use this information to improve the Site and customize your online experience.

2D. Event Data Information

The Bugsnag Services monitor errors in web, mobile and server applications and programs. Each Bugsnag Customer provides Bugsnag with error and crash Event Data from the Customer’s applications and programs. Event Data may contain personal information of the Customer’s end user. This means that if you are an end user of a service provided by a Bugsnag Customer, then Bugsnag may receive Personal Information about you from the Bugsnag Customer.

Not all Customers provide Personal Information about their end users to Bugsnag. Customers use the Services dashboard to control or block the use of end user Personal Information by the Services.

What we do with this information: Bugsnag is a data processor of Event Data, and processes Event Data only as directed by the Customer and only to provide the Service to the Customer. Only a limited group of Bugsnag employees with a need to know can access Event Data. Bugsnag encrypts Event Data in transit and at rest and uses multi-factor authentication to further secure this information.

3. Will Bugsnag share any of the Personal Information it receives?

We are not data brokers. We do not rent or sell your Personal Information to anyone. We may share your Personal Information with third parties as described in this section, but only to the extent necessary to assist us in providing the Site and Services to you.

3A. Business Partners and Vendors

Like most Internet websites, we use third parties to help ensure our Site and Services runs smoothly. We disclose your information to these third party companies so they can perform their specific functions for us. For example, we use a payment processing company to receive and process your online credit card transactions for us. We also use a cloud hosting company to host some aspects of our Services. Our business partners and vendors do not have any right to use the Personal Information we share with them beyond what is necessary to assist us with these tasks.

Some of Bugsnag’s third party vendors may recognize a unique tracking code used by your browser or application to enable you to receive customized content or to enable you to use other technologies such as tags and scripts. The tracking code may reflect de-identified demographic or other data linked to data you provide. When we employ other companies to perform functions of this nature, we only disclose the information that they need to perform their requested function. We do not authorize them to retain, share, store or use Personal Information provided by us for any other purpose.

3B. Business Transfers 

We may choose to buy or sell assets from time to time. We may share Personal Information in connection with the evaluation of such transactions. We may transfer Personal Information if we enter into such transactions. Also, if we (or our assets) are acquired or if we go out of business, enter bankruptcy or go through some other change of control, Personal Information could be one of the assets transferred to or acquired by a third party.

3C. To Protect Bugsnag and Others 

We may disclose information about you to third parties to protect the security or integrity of the Bugsnag Services platform. We also may disclose information about you to third parties where we believe it necessary or appropriate under law, for example to: (a) comply with law or court order; (b) enforce or apply our agreements; © prevent or investigate possible wrongdoing in connection with the Services; or (d) protect the rights, property or safety of Bugsnag and others.

4. Is Personal Information about me secure?

Your Bugsnag account information is protected by a password or other authentication mechanism, such as two-factor authentication, for your privacy and security. You must prevent unauthorized access to your account and other Personal Information by selecting and protecting your password and/or other sign-on mechanism appropriately and limiting access to your computer or device and browser by signing off after you have finished accessing your account.

We endeavor to encrypt and otherwise protect the privacy of your account and other Personal Information we hold in our records, but unfortunately, we cannot guarantee complete security. Unauthorized entry or use, hardware or software failure and other factors, may compromise the security of user information at any time.

5. What Personal Information can I access?

Through your account settings, you may access the following information you’ve provided to us:

  • your email address and password
  • your full name
  • your “organization name” (typically the name of your company) and
  • your credit card information.

6. What choices do I have?

Do not disclose. You can always opt not to disclose your email, name, organization name or password to us, but keep in mind that you will not be able to register to use the Bugsnag Services. You can opt not to disclose your credit card information by not purchasing a monthly Team or Pro Plan and instead buying an annual Enterprise Plan by invoice (or by buying no Plan).

Update Information. You are able to update your email, name, organization name and password by accessing the “My account” tab on your settings page. You are able to update your credit card information by accessing the “Plans & Billing” tab on your settings page. When you update information, we may maintain a copy of the unrevised information in our records.

Delete Visitor information. Visitors may request removal of their Personal Information from by contacting us at In some cases we may not be able to remove your Personal Information. If this applies to you then we will let you know that we are unable to do so and will explain why.

Delete Customer information. Customers who no longer want Bugsnag to use Customer information to provide Services may delete their accounts. If you delete your Customer account then you no longer will be able to use the Services. To delete your Customer account entirely, please select “cancel my subscription” under the “Plans & Billing” tab on your settings page. Deleted Customer account information may remain in our archive. To delete your account entirely, please select “cancel my subscription” under the “Plans & Billing” tab on your settings page.

Email unsubscribe. You can unsubscribe from our email marketing communications at any time by following the unsubscribe mechanism in the email message itself.

Cookie preferences. Browsers create and store cookies. All modern Internet browsers allow you to control your cookie settings. These settings are usually accessed in the Options or Preferences section of your browser. On your mobile device, go to Settings, then go to the specific web-browser, and then to the Cookies section. If you delete cookies from your browser then this may prevent you from taking advantage of some of our Site features. 7. Personal Information collected and controlled by Customers

As we mentioned at Section 2D, Bugsnag monitors web, mobile and server applications and programs under the direction of its Customers, to provide error Event Data about the Customer’s applications and programs to the Customer. Event Data may contain Personal Information of the individuals who use the Customer’s applications. Bugsnag itself does not collect this end user Personal Information and Bugsnag has no direct relationship with these individuals. For example, a Customer may direct Bugsnag to log certain software application’s end user information associated with Event Data, such as the end user’s device ID, email and name. Bugsnag is a data processor and follows the instructions of the Customer in these cases.

To find out more about how our Customers issue these instructions to us and handle this Personal Information you will need to review the privacy policies of each Customer. An individual who wants to correct, amend or delete inaccurate data should direct his or her request to Bugsnag’s Customer (the data controller). Separately, if our Customer requests that we remove Event Data from the Services then we will respond promptly to this request.

If you are a Customer then you are responsible for obtaining permission from your end users to share any data that may contain the end users’ Personal Information with the Bugsnag Platform. Customers use the Services dashboard to control or block the use of end user Personal Information by the Services. From time to time Bugsnag creates statistics about the way Customers generally use our Services. These statistics are derived from large sets of anonymized, aggregated Event Data. We refer to this information as “Aggregated Information.” Aggregated Information contains no Personal Information and no information that can be associated with any specific Customer. Bugsnag shares Aggregated Information with its Customers to educate them about the usefulness of the Services and to help them understand industry trends.

8. Data Retention

Unless we have deleted your information as described in this Privacy Notice, we will retain your information for as long as you have an account with us or as needed to provide you Services, comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes and enforce our agreements. Some Customer account information may remain in our archive records after we delete the Customer account, but this does not include any credit card information. You should not expect that all of your information will be completely removed from our databases in response to your requests to remove information under Section 6 of this Privacy Notice.

9. International Operations, Transfers Out of the EEA and Privacy Shield

Bugsnag’s data centers are located in the United States. If you live outside the United States, then by using our Services, interacting with our Site, or otherwise providing your personal data to us, your personal data will be transferred to and processed in the United States.

If you live within the European Economic Area, Bugsnag complies with the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield framework (Privacy Shield) as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the European Commission regarding the collection, use, and retention of personal information from data subjects who reside in the EU, and which has been adopted by the EEA. Bugsnag has certified to the Department of Commerce that it adheres to the Privacy Shield Principles of notice, choice, accountability for onward transfer, security, data integrity and purpose limitation, access, and recourse, enforcement and liability. If there is any conflict between the terms in this Privacy Notice and the Privacy Shield Principles, the Privacy Shield Principles shall govern To learn more about the Privacy Shield program, and to view Bugsnag’s certification, please visit the Privacy Shield website.

Consistent with the Privacy Shield Principles, if Bugsnag transfers your personal information to a third party acting as Bugsnag’s agent on Bugsnag’s behalf (such as Bugsnag’s cloud hosting provider located in the United States) then Bugsnag shall remain liable if its agent processes your personal information in a manner inconsistent with the Privacy Shield Principles, unless Bugsnag can prove that it is not responsible for the event giving rise to damage.

If you are from the EEA, you may have the right to access a copy of the Personal Information we hold about you or to request the correction, amendment or deletion of such information where it is inaccurate or processed in violation of data protection laws or regulations. To make such a request, please write to us at the contact details further below. We will consider and respond to your request promptly and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Furthermore, we commit to giving you an opportunity to opt-out if your Personal Information is to be disclosed to any other independent third parties different from those that are set out in this Privacy Notice or to be used for a purpose materially different from those that are set out in this Privacy Notice. If this Personal Information also incudes “sensitive” Personal Information, then in addition we will always obtain your express opt-in consent to do such things. 10. California Residents

Under California Civil Code Section 1798.83, California residents are entitled to request certain information regarding our disclosure of Personal Information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes. If you are a California resident and would like to request this information then please submit a written request to:

As part of the California Online Privacy Protection Act, Customers may change their account information any time at the Customer settings page. Customers are able to update the email, name, organization name and password by accessing the “My account” tab on the settings page. Customers are able to update or delete credit card information under the “Plans & Billing” tab on the settings page.

11. Do Not Track Policy

Your browser may offer you a “Do Not Track” option, which allows you to signal to operators of websites and web applications and services (including behavioral advertising services) that you do not wish such operators to track certain of your online activities over time and across different websites. Our Site does not support Do Not Track requests, which means that we collect information about your online activity both while you are using the Site and after you leave our Site.


COPPA The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) requires that online service providers obtain parental consent before they knowingly collect Personal Information online from children who are under 13. We do not knowingly collect or solicit Personal Information from anyone under the age of 13. If you are under 13, please do not attempt to use the Site to register to use the Services or send any Personal Information about yourself to us. If we learn that we have collected Personal Information from a child under age 13, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. 13. Changes to this Notice

We are constantly trying to improve our Site, so this Privacy Notice may need to change along with the Site. If we change the Privacy Notice then we will notify you here in this Privacy Notice. Your use of the Site after we have modified this posting will constitute your acceptance of any changes.

If we make material changes to the way we use your Personal Information then we will modify this Privacy Notice accordingly and notify you by email. Bugsnag may determine, in its sole discretion, in good faith, what constitutes a “material change” using common sense and reasonable judgment. You are responsible for updating your email address. Material changes to this Privacy Notice will be effective thirty (30) days following our email to you. For new Visitors, these changes will be effective immediately. Your continued use of our Site following notice indicates your agreement to the changes.

If you don’t agree with the new Privacy Notice then you are free to reject this Privacy Notice. Unfortunately, that means you will no longer be able to use the Site or the Services. Except for changes by us as described here, no other amendment or modification of this Privacy Notice will be effective unless in writing and signed by both you and us.

14.  How to resolve disputes relating to our privacy practices

Except for residents of the European Union, if you have a dispute with us relating to our privacy practices, please email us at Most disputes can be resolved that way. If you are a Customer and we can’t resolve our dispute that way, then please consult your Services agreement with Bugsnag. For United States residents, Bugsnag is subject to the investigatory and enforcement powers of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

For European residents, we have chosen the EU Data Protection Authorities (EU DPAs) to serve as an independent recourse mechanism for dispute resolution arising from personal information transferred from EU member countries to the United States. Bugsnag commits to cooperate with the EU DPAs and comply with the advice given by the EU DPAs with regard to data transferred from the EU.

Further, as explained in the Privacy Shield Principles, a binding arbitration option will also be made available to you in order to address residual complaints not resolved by any other means.
